Ranking the Percy Jackson Books πŸ”±

Hey friends,

Well, rereading Harry Potter and hearing about the Midnight Sun release got me all up in my feels, so I ended up rereading Percy Jackson and continuing on with the middle-grade/nostalgic feels.

I actually read Percy Jackson for the first time back in 2017, but I am rereading the Percyverse in anticipation of Tower of Nero coming out this fall. I don’t know if I’ll be doing a full ranking of all the books or just the series, but I figured it would be fun to rank the PJ books since I just finished this reread.

If you want to see me rank the rest of the series in the Percyverse, let me know!

The Last Olympian – Okay so I mentioned in my review this was my least favorite. There was nothing inherently wrong with this book and it was a solid conclusion, but personally, I like the quests over the battles and this one was all battle.

The Sea of Monsters – This is the book that many fans hate the most, but I actually like a lot of things about this one. I love Percy coming to terms with accepting Tyson and understanding Clarice. I love the nods to the Odyssey. I just like the other books more.

The Lightning Thief – Ah, the one that started it all. I think this book is so fun and introduces us to one of the best main characters in literary history. I love the plot of this one and the iconic myths that were revisited. This book sets up an amazing series, however the latter books did build on this one.

The Battle of the Labyrinth – Okay, choosing which of these two was my favorite was super hard. I love how Rick personifies the Labyrinth and keeps the main myth, while adding his own twists.

The Titan’s Curse – I didn’t think this was going to be my favorite of the main series, yet here we are. There is a slight bias, because Nico is one of my favorite characters and he’s such a cinnamon roll in this one, but this is also the first book where shit got reeeeeeeal. Like the ending of this one was dark. It also does a great job of giving us the main players for the remainder of the series and upping the stakes.

What is your favorite/least favorite Percy Jackson book?

Be sure to let me know down below! Feel free to include your ranking too!

  1. I wasn’t a fan of any of them but Sea of Monsters is definitely my least favorite, it’s such a rip off of the Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes. I had other issues with them other than the mythology aspects.

      1. I guess for me, knowing the original stories beforehand I kind of expected more from the series. I was also excited to read them for the ADHD rep.

      2. That’s fair. I think he did a good job of making them more approachable for kids, but I can see how they’re lackluster compared to the full tales. I can’t speak to the rep as I don’t have ADHD. I do appreciate that he did include the rep (along with dylexia).

      3. I think if I didn’t grow up knowing the stories I might have enjoyed them more. I 100% agree that they are a stepping stone for kids who want to get into Greek mythology. The ADHD rep, on the other hand, I’ll DM you on Twitter to discuss that.
