Synopsis

In a world where women have no rights, sisters Serina and Nomi Tessaro face two very different fates: one in the palace, the other in prison.

Serina has been groomed her whole life to become a Grace – someone to stand by the heir to the throne as a shining, subjugated example of the perfect woman. But when her headstrong and rebellious younger sister, Nomi, catches the heir’s eye, it’s Serina who takes the fall for the dangerous secret that Nomi has been hiding.

Now trapped in a life she never wanted, Nomi has only one way to save Serina: surrender to her role as a Grace until she can use her position to release her sister. This is easier said than done. A traitor walks the halls of the palace, and deception lurks in every corner. But Serina is running out of time, imprisoned on an island where she must fight to the death to survive and one wrong move could cost her everything.

Review:

[EDITED 8.7.18 — I normally don’t edit posts after they’re up, but I realized that this post was not up to the quality of my others and wanted to rework it a bit.]

In a world where women have no rights, sisters Serina and Nomi handle the world they were born into in drastically different ways.

Serina, though from a poor family has her beauty and has been training to become a Grace. Nomi, the more rebellious sister, has found issue with the world and has slowly tried to rebel. All is going as planned until Nomi is the sister picked to be the Grace and Serina covers for Nomi’s transgression and is sent to an island where she must fight to the death to survive.

Both sisters begin to experience the world as the other and begin to understand the errors in their thinking and in their society as a whole.

One of my favorite things about this book is how quick of a read it is. For fantasy, even short fantasy books, world building and character development and easily slow the pace of a story, but this one still managed to get all the information across while being a fast-paced book.

Additionally, I LOVED the relationship of the sisters in this story. Any book that has a good sibling relationship is a win for me, and Grace and Fury’s sibling relationship really spoke to me. I myself am an older sister, so the choices made by Serina and Nomi felt incredibly realistic.

I really enjoyed Sernia’s character growth as she spends time on the island. Her conversation in chapter 33 really connected with me.

As the story developed, I found myself questioning who I could and couldn’t trust. Every person had their own motive, their own reason to lie, but it kept me intrigued to find out the truth.

I didn’t realize this book was part of a series and I’m DYING for the sequel! I have no clue how this series is going to develop, but I’m so excited to find out!

Final Thoughts:

Grace and Fury is a story about sisterhood, survival, and feminism and BOY did it deliver on all fronts. This story kept me intrigued from the start and had me unable to put it down by the end. While this isn’t the fantasy for everybody, this is a fantasy story for many and I highly suggest you give it a read!

Fans of dystopian fantasy, political books, and strong sister bonds will adore this one! Those that want to smash the patriarchy will probably enjoy this one too!

All of that isolation and lovely scenery gave her the time to read voraciously and the inspiration to write her own stories.
