How Dumbledore Created the Deluminator | Theory Thursday

Hey friends,

Sorry for missing the last few Theory Thursdays! I’ve been far too busy to research them and didn’t want to skimp out on this. I should be having them for the rest of the month (and hopefully year!). This week we have another Harry Potter theory, but it’s a two-parter.

Also, sorry in advance if you’re getting sick of HP theories. They’re some of the easiest for me to find and comment on since I’m super familiar with the franchise. I will be branching out into other fandoms later in the year. If you have any suggestions, feel free to comment below or reach out to me privately. Instagram’s your best shot, but any of my social medias work too. All are always linked on the sidebar and at the bottom of the page.

Okay, self-promotion aside, let’s get into the theories!

Theory 1: Arianna Dumbledore was an Obscurial

Okay, so this theory has all but been confirmed by well everyone, but it’s important for the second theory. So for those of you who have yet to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, an Obscurial is a magical entity created by an Obscurious. An Obscurious is a dark magical entity that remains when a young witch or wizard no longer use their magic (usually by force or choice) and eventually destroys its creator. This is a grossly simplified definition, but the Super Carlin Bros explain it pretty good in their video.

Now while I am not the first person to wonder if Arianna Dumbledoor was an Obscurial, the SuperCarlin Bros have put together a pretty comprehensive video discussing this “theory”:

So yeah, I’m not going to spent too much time on this one, but this was a theory I needed to address for the second one.

Yeah, let me know what you think about this one? I know it was a huge topic of discussion like a year ago, so huzzah for relevant theories.

Theory 2: The Better One

So, now that we’ve established that Arianna is an Obscurial, time to move onto the second part – this Obscurus powers Dumbledore’s deluminator.

Again, thank you SuperCarlin Bros for inspiring this post. Here is their original video.

Reaction to theory:

I like it. I think it’s a pretty comprehensive theory and it makes sense knowing the limited knowledge that we do about deluminator. Also, I think it makes Dumbledore having the deluminator that much cooler since yeah, he clearly doesn’t need it. This theory also adds some really sweet meaning to the friendship of the Golden Trio.

Fantastic Deluminators and When to Find Them:

Since we are getting a young Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts sequel (coming in Nov, who else is pumped?!) I’d love to see some new magical items and learn more about some of the items that we were introduced to in the original Harry Potter books.

Are there any magical items you’d like to see explored more (either on Pottermore or in future movies)?

What did you think of these theories?

Let me know below!

Also spoiler for next week’s theory Thursday, we are talking about Obscurials again. 😉
